Afterthought Heel Prep
Start the even number row by knitting across the top of the foot. On the bottom (the second half of the stitches), knit across with scrap yarn, then slip all those stitches back onto your left needle. Knit across these stitches to the end.
Hate the thought of the afterthought heel? Try a Shadow Wrap Short Row heel instead. Do not choose a short row heel that works over the instep though – you’ll end up in the wrong color!
Leg
Resume pattern for the leg until you’ve reached your desired height, ending with a knit row (no slipped stitches).
Cuff
Following the cuff and cast off instructions on Perfect Toe-up Socks:
Cuff: Twisted rib cuff: *K1tbl, P1 around.
Cast off: K2, pass stitches back to the left needle and K2tog tbl. *K1, pass 2 stitches back to the left needle, K2tog tbl, rep from * to end. When left with one stitch, pull up a loop from the first bound off stitch, and pass the first stitch over that one, then pull yarn tail through to close.
Afterthought Heel
Once you’ve bound off, you’re going to put the heel stitches back on your needles and work an afterthought heel. Do this by pointing the toes downward. Pick up all the stitches underneath your waste yarn by working right to left and picking up only the right leg of each stitch. (The number of stitches you pick up should be the same as the number of stitches worked in the scrap yarn.)
Flip the sock around so that the toes are now pointed up. Pick up all the stitches underneath your waste yarn by working right to left and picking up only the right leg of each stitch. (The number of stitches you pick up should be the same as the number of stitches worked in the scrap yarn.)
You should now have the same number of stitches on your needles as you cast on initially. Using MC, knit around, picking up two extra stitches at each corner to close up the gaps.
Knit around, working a k2tog at the end of each side to close up the gaps.
Row 1: Knit even one round.
Row 2: Dec rnd *K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before m, k2tog, k1, sl m; rep from * once more – 4 sts dec’d.
Rep two rows until the heel is at the right depth (you can try it on) or 11, (13, 13) sts left on each needle ending with Row 1.
Kitchner to close. Weave in ends and block.
