Rhinebeck

Posted on October 7, 2019September 26, 2019 by KateDos

Rhinebeck is the New York State Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, Dutchess county, NY. (Facebook) (Instagram) (Twitter) (Wikipedia) It’s “one of the largest annual gatherings of fiber-arts enthusiasts in the United States.” (Wikipedia). It’s attended by fiber crafters of all kinds as well as growers of the various livestock that produce fiber.

It’s very common for attendees (or supporters) to make a “Rhinebeck Sweater”. This is just a handknit sweater of any design that is made with the intention of wearing it during Rhinebeck. Some crafters participate in KAL/CAL (Knit-a-long/Crochet-a-long) for the same design, but you can feel free to make your own. Most people accept other handknit garments like shawls and wraps as “Rhinebeck sweaters”.

This year, with all the various discussions on diversity and inclusiveness, the tag is #RhineBipocSweater. It’s a Rhinebeck sweater, but by a BIPOC designer (Ravelry list of BIPOC designs). I highly support this movement.
