Here’s my favorite ways to make what I consider to be the perfect socks:
I start with Vanilla Socks (but you can use any sock pattern) and make the edits below.
Perfect Round Toes:
Use Turkish cast on (this includes one knit row).
1) k1, m1L, k to last st, m1R, k1. rep for second needle
2) k around.
Rep both rows to needed stitch count.
Perfect Gusset: Knit across the top of the foot, and for the increase rows (should be every other row) increase as follows:
K1, M1L, K across to last stitch, M1R, K1.
Perfect Heels: Follow the pattern except use German Short Rows instead of W&T. This makes a tighter connection and you’ll have less gaping in the heel. Video demonstration
Cuff: Twisted rib cuff: *K1tbl, P1 around.
Cast off: K2, pass stitches back to the left needle and K2tog tbl. *K1, pass 2 stitches back to the left needle, K2tog tbl, rep from * to end. When left with one stitch, pull up a loop from the first bound off stitch, and pass the first stitch over that one, then pull yarn tail through to close.
